The Name

تَعَارُف

Before You Meet — mutual acquaintance, getting to know

Before You Meet is an Arabic word from the root ʿain-ra-fa, the same root that gives us maʿrifa — knowledge, recognition. It appears in the Qur'an in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13): "O mankind, We have created you from male and female and made you nations and tribes that you may know one another — li-taʿarafu."

The word names the Islamic concept for the preliminary stage between two people considering marriage: the structured, honest acquaintance that happens before the formal proposal (khitba), and well before the nikah. It is exactly what this tool is for — helping two people get to know one another properly, where they fit and where they do not, before the most important decision of their lives.

What is Before You Meet?

Before You Meet is a private marriage compatibility tool designed for Muslims who take marriage seriously. It helps two people considering marriage to understand each other honestly before committing — through structured questions, honest self-reflection, and side-by-side comparison of answers.

Why does this exist?

Too many Muslim marriages fail because the important conversations happen too late — or never happen at all. Cultural pressure, surface-level compatibility checks, and the awkwardness of asking direct questions mean people often enter marriage without truly knowing what they are walking into.

Before You Meet exists to change that. It creates a safe, structured space where both people can answer honestly, see where they align, and identify the conversations that need to happen before the nikah.

How it works

  1. Connect with someone — three ways to do that, explained below
  2. Both people fill in their profiles and answer around 135 questions across 16 chapters — realistically about an hour, but there's no need to do it in one sitting
  3. As each chapter is completed by both people, results appear showing where you overlap and where you differ
  4. The tool highlights dealbreakers, discussion topics, and generates conversation starters
  5. A compatibility analysis provides a personalised summary of strengths and areas for discussion

Three ways to connect

Every path leads to the same honest, structured comparison above — they only differ in how the two of you first get connected, and how much say a third party has along the way.

1

Direct Connect — you already know who you're considering. Share your personal code with each other and you each answer honestly, apart. Once you're both done, you see where you align and where you differ, and can generate a full compatibility analysis and Wali Report together. If you'd rather do a lighter, one-off check first — someone's shared their code with you but you're not ready to connect properly yet — Look Someone Up lets you preview compatibility on just their public chapters, with no connection formed and nothing shared back to them.

2

Matchmaker Introduction — a trusted matchmaker is involved from the start. They propose a match, and each side reviews an anonymised summary and decides separately, in sequence — the sister first, then the brother, only once she's said yes. Nothing is shared with the other person, and neither of you is ever told what happened, unless both of you say yes.

3

Pool Match Alerts — no one specific in mind yet. Complete your questionnaire and mark what genuinely matters to you as essential. If you choose to opt in from your profile, we'll email only you the moment someone in the pool clears your own threshold — and you clear theirs too. Nothing happens automatically beyond that: you decide whether to take it further, the same way as every other path here.

Islamic Foundation

Every question in Before You Meet is grounded in the understanding that marriage in Islam is half of your deen. The tool does not replace the involvement of families, walis, or scholars — it complements them by ensuring both people have done the honest work before those conversations happen.

Who built this?

Before You Meet was built by a Muslim who went through the marriage process and saw firsthand what was missing. It is not a commercial product. It is a tool built with genuine intention to help the ummah make better, more informed decisions about one of the most important commitments in life.
